How to read those letter-note piano sheets
The first time I saw one I assumed the formatting was broken: t t o o p p o. Looks like a cat crossed the keyboard, or a password leak. It's Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star. There's a whole alphabet behind it — the one half the internet's piano tutorials are written in, in YouTube descriptions, fan wikis, and forum posts going back a decade — and it takes about two minutes to learn.
The alphabet, in two minutes
Picture your computer keyboard lying along the piano. The number row is the lowest octave: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 walks up the white keys from a low C. Then 8 9 0 q w e r takes the next octave, and the letter t lands on middle C. From there the white keys spell t y u i o p a, then s d f g h j k for the octave above, l z x c v b n above that, and m is the very top C. Five octaves, sixty-one keys, no key signatures, no staff to decode.
Sharps are the capitals. The black key sits up above the white one, so you reach up — shift — to get it: t is C, T is C-sharp. And square brackets mean together: [tu] is C and E struck at once, a two-finger chord in four characters. That's the entire system. Everything else you'll see in a sheet — bar lines, dashes, blank lines — is just the transcriber breathing.
What the sheet won't tell you
Here's the honest part: letter sheets are a fingering cheat, not sheet music. There is no rhythm in them anywhere. Nothing says how long to hold a note, where the beat falls, or when to pause — you supply all of that from memory, by humming along. Which is why the method works brilliantly for songs you already know and falls flat for ones you've never heard. Proper notation carries the rhythm on its back; letter sheets hand you the keys and trust your ear for the rest. For a beginner picking out a tune they love, that's a fair trade. It's how I'd have learned years earlier, if I'd known the sheets existed.
